We had to go up north at the weekend for a bit of business. We decided as it was such a long trip that we should have an overnight stay near inverness. That’s not really the bit I want to waffle about though. We had been given a weather forecast of snow, wind and rain. Guess what? It was all true!! As we drove up the sky got blacker until, not long out of Pitlochry, the heavens dumped on us. Snow. The wonderful white stuff. I don’t know why I love it I just do. We travelled in and out of the falling white stuff until we got to Inverness. The cairngorm mountain range looked magnificent draped in its white blankets. The peaks could not be seen underneath the grey sky. The light up there is different. As you are driving along it feels quite eerie. Ghostly.
We stayed in one of those old Scottish buildings that needed a bit of TLC in places. It had creaky wooden floors. The plumbing screeched when you ran the water. There was very little heat from the radiator in our room. (We decided there would be no point in mentioning it as it could only be fixed by a major revamp from a developer who would take the shortbread out the tin). The windows were single glazed and draughty. The most shocking thing of all though, is this; we had a lovely meal, the dining room having a huge log fire, Christmas tree in the corner and a party of grey heids in the dining room. Anyway, for pudding I asked for the sticky toffee pudding, I would like it with custard. No such thing on the menu. I was offered ice cream or double cream. It’s snowing outside, the temperature over night is minus Baltic, would you like ice cream? No! I want the whole comfort food experience. I was devastated. Does anyone know of a hotel without custard? I’m such a nit-picker, I know, I didn’t even mention the lentil soup that hadn’t seen a bit ham and was way short of lentils. No matter, the jewels in Scotland’s crown had a beauty surpassing the best of shortbread tins. We had a great time!
