Having a rant again.
There’s something about a cosy hotel room. I’d be happy to dig in and hibernate for a few days, being like a squirrel and only come of for meal breaks. Huge buffet breakfast, everything you can imagine being on a breakfast plate is there. You can even go back for more. I don’t think I am a particularly greedy person, but, I’m on holiday, I reason to myself. Early evening we have dinner, the food is beautiful, the service impeccable but, once again, there is no custard. I can’t tell you how upsetting this is. John and I have had discussions on this subject. A possibility is because the kitchen doesn’t like holding it, it forming a skin, too much would be lost in the process. But, I’m not happy with that, I’ve made loads of custard without skin or waste. Nothing makes sense. Look, apple crumble was on the menu. It’s only natural that it comes with custard. It’s traditional. Would you have Christmas dinner without a turkey? If you do, then it is no longer a Christmas dinner! It becomes dinner you had on Christmas day. I had to ask if at least the crumble was served hot. It was warm. The crumble wasn’t proper crumble, the chef had sprinkled on top an adequate amount of granola mix form the breakfast menu. It was presented with a little jug of what they called crème anglaise, giving you the impression of custard. It was cold. Whatever it was meant to be. Cold. I now have a hankering for home made apple crumble and custard. I can see it in my mind, I’m peeling the apples, I’m preparing the crumble mix, there’s brown sugar in the cupboard, I know there’s mixed spice and what not lying around from last years cake. I can now see it steaming as it comes out the oven. The smell is heavenly.I will let you know, when I find, custard in the Heilans of Scotland. I'm now away to make some.

AuthorI enjoy writing short stories and reading yours. I'm always amazed at where our mind can take us. I think it is therapeutic to let your mind wander off and free itself of personal drudgery. Archives
